BrightKey's Assessment

The British School of Barcelona (BSB) is a private, coeducational British international day school founded in 1958 and part of the Cognita group since 2007. It operates across multiple campuses in and around Barcelona - including BSB City, BSB Castelldefels, BSB Nexus (pre-university) and BSB Sitges - serving nearly 2,000 students aged 2 to 18. The school follows the National Curriculum of England and Wales through IGCSEs, then offers two university-entry routes at sixth form: A Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

BSB's strongest verified credential is its inspection record. In its October 2024 British Schools Overseas (BSO) inspection it was graded 'Outstanding in Every Category', retaining the same judgement it first achieved in 2021, and the school describes itself as the only school in Barcelona to hold this distinction. The school is also accredited by NABSS (the National Association of British Schools in Spain) and is an authorised IB World School and Cambridge/Pearson examination centre.

Academic outcomes in 2024 were strong across both pathways. A Levels recorded a 100% pass rate with 46% of grades at A*-A, while the IB Diploma cohort posted a 100% pass rate and an average of 34.2 points - well above the global average of around 30 - with 19.4% of students scoring 40 or more and one student achieving the maximum 45 points. At GCSE, 19% of grades were awarded at grade 9 and 60% of Maths and English Language grades fell in the 7-9 band.

Instruction is primarily in English, with Spanish (and Catalan in the local context) taught alongside, and the school provides English-language support for students still developing fluency. Fees for 2026-2027 range from roughly EUR 6,100 at the earliest years up to about EUR 20,930 in the senior years, plus a one-off non-refundable matriculation fee of EUR 3,400. BSB is a day school and does not offer boarding.

Why These Ratings?

Inspection & AccreditationS Exceptional

Rated 'Outstanding in Every Category' in its October 2024 British Schools Overseas (BSO) inspection - the top verbatim band - so this dimension is tiered 'S'. The school also holds NABSS accreditation and IB World School and Cambridge/Pearson examination authorisation, all independently verifiable.

Strengths & Trade-offs

Strengths

  • Top 'Outstanding in Every Category' BSO inspection grade in 2024, retained from 2021
  • Dual sixth-form pathways - both A Levels and the IB Diploma - giving families genuine choice
  • Strong, published 2024 results: 100% A Level and IB pass rates, IB average of 34.2 points
  • Long-established (founded 1958) and backed by the global Cognita group since 2007
  • Large multi-campus network across Barcelona, Castelldefels and Sitges with age-stage specialisation

Trade-offs

  • Day school only - no boarding option for international or distant families
  • Premium fees, with senior years exceeding EUR 20,000 at the City campus plus a EUR 3,400 matriculation fee
  • Multi-campus model means experience and age range vary by site rather than a single unified campus
  • Publicly available pastoral and class-size detail is limited, with ratios described only as varying by stage

  • Internationally mobile families seeking globally recognised UK and IB qualifications
  • Expat families needing English-medium instruction with Spanish language support

Not Ideal For

Curriculum

BSB follows the National Curriculum of England and Wales leading to IGCSEs, then offers a choice at sixth form between A Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. It is an authorised IB World School and a Cambridge/Pearson examination centre. The school also prepares students for Spanish university access where required.

Fees

Fees apply to the 2026-2027 academic year (EUR), paid in ten instalments, and vary by campus and year group - from about EUR 6,100 at the youngest stages up to roughly EUR 20,930 in senior years at BSB City. A one-off, non-refundable matriculation fee of EUR 3,400 applies, with sibling discounts on tuition from the third child and a 2% prompt-payment discount.

Admissions

Admission is by application across the campuses, which span ages 2-18 (specific age ranges differ by site). The school carries out informal English-language assessments as part of entry, and matriculation is confirmed on payment of the one-off matriculation fee.

Campus Life

BSB runs several campuses around Barcelona - BSB City in the city centre (ages 3-18), BSB Castelldefels, BSB Nexus for pre-university students aged 16-18, and BSB Sitges for younger children - serving nearly 2,000 students in total. The school holds the Wellbeing Award for Schools and participates in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, reflecting an emphasis on pastoral care and enrichment alongside academics.
