BrightKey's Assessment
Benjamin Franklin International School (BFIS) opened in 1986, founded the prior year by ten Barcelona families who wanted an American-style education in the city. From a start of 150 students and 23 teachers it has grown to a deliberately capped enrollment of around 700, drawn from more than 60 nationalities, on a campus in the Sarria-Sant Gervasi area of Barcelona. It is a private, non-profit, co-educational day school - there is no boarding.
The academic spine is a comprehensive American curriculum from Nursery (age 3) through Grade 12, layered with two International Baccalaureate programmes: the Middle Years Programme, added in 2023 for Grades 6-10, and the Diploma Programme, offered in Grades 11-12 since 2011. Graduating students can leave with an American High School Diploma, the IB Diploma, and recognition toward Spanish requirements. English is the language of instruction, with Spanish, Catalan, and French taught as additional languages.
The school is a member of the Council of International Schools and is accredited by the Middle States Association (MSA-CESS), alongside recognition from the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Spanish Ministry of Education. As an IB World School it is authorized by the IBO for both the MYP and the DP. Standard tuition for 2026-2027 ranges from 12,950 EUR in Early Childhood to 21,720 EUR in High School, on top of a one-time 6,000 EUR entrance fee and an annual matriculation charge, placing it among the more premium international options in Barcelona.
BFIS publishes a broad list of university acceptances spanning the US, UK, Spain, and beyond, but does not publish an average IB Diploma score, so academic-outcome strength cannot be independently verified from public data. Families should treat placement claims as indicative rather than audited.
Why These Ratings?
Inspection & AccreditationA — Excellent
Spain has no graded school-inspection band for international schools, so the top 'S' tier is unavailable by rule. BFIS instead demonstrates genuine accreditation depth - CIS membership, Middle States (MSA-CESS) accreditation, full IBO authorization for MYP and DP, and recognition by both the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Spanish Ministry of Education - which supports an 'A' on accreditation depth.
Strengths & Trade-offs
Strengths
- Long-established (since 1986) non-profit American school with stable, deliberately capped enrollment of around 700
- Dual IB authorization (MYP since 2023, DP since 2011) layered onto a full American Nursery-to-Grade-12 curriculum
- Strong external recognition: CIS membership, MSA-CESS accreditation, and IBO World School status
- Highly international community with more than 60 nationalities represented
- Recent purpose-built facilities, including a 2021 secondary building and a Center for Creativity and Innovation due 2026
Trade-offs
- No published average IB Diploma score, so academic outcomes cannot be independently verified
- Premium fee structure with a substantial one-time 6,000 EUR entrance fee on top of annual tuition
- Enrollment is capped near capacity, which can limit availability of places
- No dedicated EAL/English-support programme is publicly documented, which may matter for non-English-speaking entrants

Not Ideal For

Standard tuition for 2026-2027 runs from 12,950 EUR (Early Childhood) to 17,000 EUR (Elementary), 18,240 EUR (Middle School), and 21,720 EUR (High School).
