BrightKey's Assessment

TASIS The American School in England, founded in 1976 in Thorpe, Surrey, is the second-oldest school in the TASIS family that began as The American School in Switzerland. It is a co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 3 to 18, drawing a student body of more than 70 nationalities to a campus within commuting distance of central London and close to Heathrow.

The academic model is distinctively dual. Lower and Middle School pupils follow an American core curriculum, and in the Upper School students work toward the American High School Diploma with the option of over 20 Advanced Placement courses, or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, which the school has offered since the 2005-06 year. World languages taught include French, Spanish, German and Mandarin Chinese, and pupils for whom English is an additional language are supported through a dedicated International Section.

The school is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the International Baccalaureate Organisation, and is a member of the Independent Schools Association. As an association independent school in England it is inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI); its most recent published cycle comprises a Routine Inspection in 2023 and a Non-Routine Inspection in 2024 under the current met / not-met framework.

Boarding is offered to pupils aged 13 to 18, and total enrolment is in the region of 650 pupils. Published 2026-27 fees, inclusive of VAT, run from £15,600 for Pre-Kindergarten to £37,170 for Grades 9-12 as a day pupil, with full-year boarding at £69,650.

Why These Ratings?

Inspection & AccreditationA Excellent

Tiered 'A' rather than 'S' because the school's recent ISI inspections fall under the post-2023 framework, which reports outcomes as standards met or not met and does not award a verbatim 'Excellent' grade; no older verbatim 'Excellent' graded judgement was found. Accreditation is strong and multi-body (NEASC, CIS, IB), which supports a solid 'A'.

Strengths & Trade-offs

Strengths

  • Dual American Diploma plus AP and IB Diploma pathways, giving families genuine curriculum choice in the Upper School
  • Triple accreditation by NEASC, CIS and the IB, plus ISA membership and ISI inspection
  • Highly international community of more than 70 nationalities
  • Boarding available from age 13, with a green Surrey campus close to London and Heathrow
  • Dedicated International Section providing English-as-an-additional-language support

Trade-offs

  • Fees sit at the premium end, with full-year boarding at £69,650 and senior day fees above £37,000
  • No published verbatim 'Excellent' ISI grade, as recent inspections use the met / not-met framework
  • Less suited to families seeking a British GCSE / A-Level route, which the school does not offer
  • Quantitative IB and AP results are not prominently published, limiting outcome comparison

Is It Right For You?

Best For

  • American and international families wanting a US-style education near London
  • Students who may relocate within the global TASIS or US university system
  • Families seeking a choice between AP and the IB Diploma under one roof
  • Boarders aged 13-18 wanting a campus close to Heathrow

Not Ideal For

  • Families set on the British GCSE and A-Level pathway
  • Those seeking the lowest-cost independent option
  • Families wanting a verified 'Outstanding' or 'Excellent' inspection grade as the deciding factor
  • Day families living far from the Thorpe / Runnymede area

Curriculum

An American core curriculum runs through the Lower and Middle Schools. In the Upper School students pursue the American High School Diploma with over 20 AP courses, or the IB Diploma Programme (offered since 2005-06). World languages include French, Spanish, German and Mandarin Chinese.

Published 2026-27 fees are inclusive of VAT. Day fees range from £15,600 (Pre-Kindergarten) to £37,170 (Grades 9-12); full-year boarding (Grades 8-12) is £69,650, with single-semester boarding options. A £240 application fee and a one-time £900 Development Fund fee apply to new students; day fees exclude busing, uniforms and external exam costs.

Admissions

Co-educational, non-selective international intake spanning more than 70 nationalities, with a dedicated International Section supporting students for whom English is an additional language. A non-refundable £240 application fee applies.
