BrightKey's Assessment

Southbank International School is a full-continuum International Baccalaureate school in central London, founded in 1979 and now part of the Cognita group. It delivers all three IB programmes - the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme - across campuses in Hampstead, Kensington and Westminster, serving students from age 2 through 18. English is the language of instruction, with embedded English as an Additional Language support for younger students who arrive with little or no English.

Academically the school reports strong Diploma outcomes. For the Class of 2025 it published an average score of 35.4 points against a stated global average of 30.58, with three students achieving the maximum 45 points. The school positions itself as one of London's leading IB schools and draws a notably international community of around 70 nationalities, with more than 20 languages represented at its Westminster campus.

The school is an IB World School authorised across all three programmes and is inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). Its most recent campus inspections (2024-2025) fall under the ISI's post-2023 framework, which reports compliance with the Independent School Standards on a met / not-met basis rather than awarding a graded 'Excellent' or 'Outstanding' band; on that basis it is rated 'A' for accreditation depth rather than the top tier.

Fees are at the premium end of the London international market - up to £16,033 per term for the Diploma Programme in 2026/27, inclusive of VAT, alongside deposit, capital and application charges. The school is a day school with no boarding, operating across multiple central-London sites rather than a single all-through campus.

Why These Ratings?

Inspection & AccreditationA Excellent

Rated 'A' rather than 'S' on accreditation depth: the school is a full ISI-inspected independent school and an IB World School authorised across all three IB programmes (PYP, MYP, DP), but its recent inspections (2024-2025) fall under the post-2023 ISI framework, which reports compliance on a met / not-met basis and does not award a verbatim 'Excellent' or 'Outstanding' graded band. With no such top-band judgement to cite, the 'S' reserved for verbatim 'Excellent'/'Outstanding' is not warranted.

Strengths & Trade-offs

Strengths

  • Full IB continuum (PYP, MYP, DP) authorised end-to-end, ages 2-18, within one school
  • Strong published DP outcomes: Class of 2025 average of 35.4 against a 30.58 global average, with three perfect 45 scores
  • Highly international community of around 70 nationalities reinforcing genuine international-mindedness
  • Embedded EAL support enabling students with little or no English to access PYP and MYP
  • Central-London campuses across Hampstead, Kensington and Westminster offering catchment flexibility

Trade-offs

  • Premium fees, with DP at up to £16,033 per term inc. VAT for 2026/27 plus deposit and capital charges
  • Recent ISI inspections use a met / not-met framework, so no top graded band evidences excellence
  • Programmes split across separate campuses rather than one continuous all-through site
  • Day-only school with no boarding provision

Is It Right For You?

Best For

  • Internationally mobile families wanting a single IB pathway from age 2 to 18
  • Students who thrive in a multilingual, multinational peer group
  • Families targeting strong IB Diploma results for university entry
  • Children needing structured EAL support to enter an English-medium programme

Not Ideal For

  • Families seeking a British GCSE / A-Level or Cambridge curriculum
  • Parents requiring boarding accommodation
  • Budget-conscious families given premium termly fees and extra charges
  • Those wanting a single all-through campus rather than separate sites

Curriculum

An IB World School delivering the full IB continuum: Early Childhood (2-5) and PYP (to 11) at Hampstead and Kensington, MYP (Grades 6-10) and DP (Grades 11-12) at Westminster. An IB Career-Related Programme is offered in partnership with SCAD, and the school references a High School Diploma on an American grading system.

Fees

Published termly fees include VAT. For 2026/27, fees run from £6,959 (Early Childhood 3 half-day) to £16,033 (Grades 11-12, DP); the prior 2025/26 DP fee was £15,446. Additional charges include a £300 application fee, a £2,000 refundable deposit and a Capital Development Fee (£3,300 for new joiners in 2026/27, falling to £780 thereafter). Card payments are not accepted.

Admissions

The school describes itself as non-selective with rolling admissions. A non-refundable £300 application fee applies and does not guarantee a place. EAL support is available for younger entrants with little or no English.

Campus Life

Three central-London locations across Hampstead, Kensington and Westminster, with the Diploma Programme at the Westminster campus (Conway Street and Cleveland Street sites, the latter opened in 2018). The student body spans roughly 70 nationalities with over 20 languages represented at Westminster. The school is part of the Cognita family of schools.
