Tier Profile
How is University of California ranked?
Where does University of California rank?
BrightKey does not publish a single overall ranking number. We rate every university independently across six dimensions rather than collapsing it into one misleading position. On that basis, University of California sits in the global top tier — with 5 dimensions rated S-tier and 1 rated A-tier. Commercial rankings (QS, THE) swing yearly on methodology changes and draw roughly half their weight from reputation surveys; we think a dimension-by-dimension view is more reliable for the decisions families actually make.
Why doesn't BrightKey give University of California a QS-style rank?
Because a single rank blends six very different things — alumni network, employability, teaching quality, curriculum relevance, institutional health, and student experience — into one number that hides the trade-offs that matter most. A university that is S-tier on employability but B-tier on student experience means very different things for different students. We publish the rating on each dimension so you can judge by your own priorities.

How we measure outcomes →BrightKey's Assessment
UCLA ranks among the world's top 30 universities (QS 2026) and is the most-applied university in the United States with over 160,000 applications annually. Home to the Anderson School of Management (top 15 MBA globally), the David Geffen School of Medicine, and deeply embedded in LA's tech and entertainment ecosystem, UCLA combines elite research output with unmatched industry access. It competes directly with UC Berkeley for academic prestige within the UC system while offering a warmer climate and stronger entertainment/media ties than crosstown rival USC.
Why These Ratings?
Tap any dimension below to see the evidence behind the tier.
Network StrengthS — Exceptional
The UC system connects over 2.8 million living alumni worldwide. Anderson MBA alumni dominate LA's finance and tech sectors, while UCLA graduates hold senior positions at Snap, SpaceX, Disney, Netflix, Google, and Goldman Sachs. The entertainment industry is saturated with UCLA alumni from the School of Theater, Film and Television. Fourteen Nobel laureates are affiliated with the university, and the Bruin alumni network is particularly dominant across Southern California's USD 1.6 trillion economy.
EmployabilityS — Exceptional
UCLA's location in Los Angeles provides direct pipeline access to tech companies (Snap, SpaceX, Hulu, Riot Games), entertainment studios (Disney, Warner Bros, Netflix, Universal), and aerospace firms. Bay Area tech giants actively recruit on campus. Career outcomes data shows 89 percent of graduates are employed or in graduate school within six months of graduation. Anderson MBA median starting salary exceeds USD 160,000. The UC system's reputation carries strong weight internationally, particularly in Asia-Pacific markets.
Teaching QualityA — Excellent
As a large public research university with 47,000 students, UCLA's introductory courses often feature lecture halls of 300-400 students, particularly in popular majors like biology, psychology, and economics. Upper-division courses shrink significantly to 20-40 students with strong faculty engagement. Research faculty are world-class with active labs and publication records. The teaching quality earns an A rather than S primarily due to the scale challenge in lower-division courses and reliance on graduate teaching assistants for discussion sections.
Curriculum RelevanceS — Exceptional
Anderson MBA consistently ranks top 15 globally with specialized programs in entertainment management and technology leadership. The David Geffen School of Medicine ranks top 10 for primary care and top 20 for research. Samueli Engineering ranks top 20 nationally. The School of Theater, Film and Television is top 5 in the US. UCLA's annual research expenditure exceeds USD 1.7 billion, placing it among the top 5 research universities nationally with cutting-edge programs in AI, genomics, and sustainability.
Institutional HealthS — Exceptional
UCLA's endowment stands at approximately USD 7.4 billion, supplemented by the broader UC system's USD 180 billion in managed assets. California state appropriations provide baseline funding stability. Private giving reached record levels exceeding USD 800 million in recent campaigns. The Real Estate and Growth Enterprise (RGE) Phase 2 capital plan is investing over USD 5 billion in campus infrastructure including new student housing, research facilities, and the UCLA Research Park. Bond ratings remain at the highest tier.
Student ExperienceS — Exceptional
Located in Westwood, students are 1.5 miles from Santa Monica beach and surrounded by LA's cultural offerings including museums, concerts, and dining. Over 1,100 student organizations span every interest from cultural groups to professional societies. UCLA athletics (Pac-12/Big Ten) create strong school spirit, particularly basketball with 11 NCAA championships. Greek life is prominent with 70+ chapters. Housing is scarce after first year, pushing most students to Westwood apartments. Seventy percent of students graduate within four years. The campus recreation facilities rank among the nation's best.

Admission Tips
UCLA uses the UC Application (not Common App), open August through November 30 with no early decision or early action options. Applicants must complete four Personal Insight Questions (PIQs) of 350 words each, choosing from eight prompts that emphasize leadership, creativity, and community contribution. SAT/ACT scores are not required or considered (test-blind policy since 2021). Admitted students typically hold weighted GPAs of 3.7-3.9 (4.0+ weighted is common) with completion of all A-G subject requirements including 4 years of English, 3 years of math, and 2 years of lab science. International applicants need TOEFL 100+ or IELTS 7.0+ minimum. F-1 visa holders qualify for 12 months OPT (36 months for STEM). Some majors like Computer Science and Nursing use supplemental review or lottery systems due to extreme demand. Admission rate hovers around 9 percent overall.
Campus & City Life
UCLA's 419-acre campus sits in Westwood Village, a walkable neighborhood with restaurants, theaters, and shops just 1.5 miles from Santa Monica beach. The campus is a hub for Division I athletics with UCLA basketball (11 NCAA titles) and football (Rose Bowl stadium) creating strong school spirit year-round. Over 1,100 registered student organizations cover everything from cultural associations to pre-professional clubs, with 14 percent international student representation bringing global perspectives. Greek life is prominent with 70+ fraternities and sororities. After guaranteed first-year housing, most students move to Westwood apartments (budget USD 1,800-3,000/month with roommates). UCLA Recreation operates world-class facilities including an Olympic-sized pool, rock climbing wall, and extensive intramural sports. LA's cultural scene (LACMA, Getty, Hollywood, Koreatown dining) is accessible by car or rideshare, though limited public transit remains a challenge for car-free students.
