How is Purdue University ranked?

Where does Purdue University rank?

BrightKey does not publish a single overall ranking number. We rate every university independently across six dimensions rather than collapsing it into one misleading position. On that basis, Purdue University sits in the global top tier — with 3 dimensions rated S-tier and 3 rated A-tier. Commercial rankings (QS, THE) swing yearly on methodology changes and draw roughly half their weight from reputation surveys; we think a dimension-by-dimension view is more reliable for the decisions families actually make.

Why doesn't BrightKey give Purdue University a QS-style rank?

Because a single rank blends six very different things — alumni network, employability, teaching quality, curriculum relevance, institutional health, and student experience — into one number that hides the trade-offs that matter most. A university that is S-tier on employability but B-tier on student experience means very different things for different students. We publish the rating on each dimension so you can judge by your own priorities.

BrightKey's Assessment

Purdue University ranks around 100 in QS World 2026 and stands as a top-10 US public engineering school, with Aerospace Engineering in the top 5 nationally and a legacy of 25 astronauts including Neil Armstrong. A Big Ten flagship with the Daniels School of Business (formerly Krannert) and a tuition freeze since 2013, Purdue delivers exceptional STEM value. Compared to UIUC and Wisconsin, Purdue leads in aerospace and value but trails slightly in overall brand prestige and computer science rankings.

Why These Ratings?

Tap any dimension below to see the evidence behind the tier.

Network StrengthA Excellent

Purdue's Big Ten membership connects graduates to a massive athletic and professional network. The university claims 14 Nobel laureate affiliations and 25 astronauts including Neil Armstrong and Eugene Cernan. Corporate alumni dominate Midwest industry through Caterpillar, John Deere, Cummins, and Eli Lilly. With over 500,000 living alumni worldwide, the Boilermaker network is particularly strong in engineering, manufacturing, and defense sectors across the United States.

EmployabilityS Exceptional

Engineering graduates enjoy direct corporate pipelines to Caterpillar, John Deere, Lockheed Martin, Rolls-Royce (North American HQ in Indianapolis), and Raytheon. Big Tech recruiting from Purdue CS has grown significantly with Amazon, Google, and Microsoft all maintaining active campus presence. The Co-op Program is among the strongest in the Midwest. Engineering reports 96 percent positive graduate outcomes within six months, with median starting salaries above USD 75,000.

Teaching QualityA Excellent

The 13:1 student-faculty ratio masks a split experience: introductory STEM lectures can exceed 300 students, while upper-division and graduate courses are small and research-intensive. Faculty are highly research-active with over USD 600M in annual research expenditures. The Co-op and undergraduate research programs provide hands-on learning. Big Ten flagship resources include state-of-the-art labs, the Birck Nanotechnology Center, and extensive library systems.

Curriculum RelevanceS Exceptional

The College of Engineering consistently ranks top 10 among US public universities, with Aerospace Engineering in the top 5 nationally. Computer Science ranks in the top 20, while the Daniels School of Business carries the Krannert legacy of quantitative rigor. The Polytechnic Institute offers applied technology programs unique among research universities, and the College of Pharmacy ranks in the top 10 nationally, creating a broad STEM-focused curriculum portfolio.

Institutional HealthS Exceptional

Purdue holds a USD 3.4B endowment supplemented by strong Indiana state appropriations. The landmark tuition freeze since 2013 demonstrates fiscal discipline while maintaining investment in facilities and faculty. Corporate research partnerships with Rolls-Royce, Lockheed Martin, and Eli Lilly generate substantial revenue. Big Ten media revenue sharing and conference financial stability provide additional long-term security for athletics and institutional operations.

Student ExperienceA Excellent

West Lafayette offers a classic small-town Big Ten college experience centered entirely around the university. Boilermakers football and basketball at Ross-Ade Stadium and Mackey Arena drive school spirit. The Purdue Bell Tower and Engineering Fountain are iconic landmarks. Greek life is significant at roughly 20 percent participation. Over 1,000 student organizations serve the 51,000-student body. Indianapolis is one hour south for urban amenities, while campus life is self-contained and walkable.
