BrightKey's Assessment

British School Jakarta (BSJ) opened in 1973 as the British International School under British Embassy auspices, and was renamed in 2014 to comply with Indonesian rules barring 'international' in school names. It now educates more than 1,390 students from over 50 nationalities on a 45-acre campus in Bintaro, South Tangerang, in the Greater Jakarta area.

The academic model blends a British foundation with the IB. Early Years and Primary follow an English National Curriculum / EYFS-based framework, after which students move into the IB Middle Years Programme in Years 7-11 and the IB Diploma Programme in Years 12-13. Notably, BSJ does not route upper-secondary students through IGCSE; it uses the IB MYP as the bridge into the Diploma. The school reports an average IB Diploma score of 35, above the global average of around 30.

BSJ holds joint accreditation from the Council of International Schools (CIS), the International Baccalaureate, and WASC, reaccredited in July 2023 and valid through 2028. It is a member of COBIS, a founding member of FOBISIA, and a member of HMC and SEASAC, and is recognised as an Apple Distinguished School. It is not inspected under the UK Department for Education's British Schools Overseas (BSO) framework, so its quality assurance rests on the modern CIS/IB/WASC accreditation model rather than a graded inspection band.

The school is a day school; no boarding provision is advertised. Fees for 2026/2027 are published in Indonesian Rupiah and rise with year group, placing BSJ at the premium end of the Jakarta international market.

Why These Ratings?

Inspection & AccreditationA Excellent

Rated 'A' rather than 'S': BSJ is not inspected under the UK BSO framework, so there is no verbatim 'Outstanding' inspection band to cite. Instead it holds joint CIS, IB and WASC accreditation, reaccredited in July 2023 and valid through 2028 — a robust modern compliance-and-improvement model, which maps to 'A' under the brand rules.

Strengths & Trade-offs

Strengths

  • Full IB continuum at secondary (MYP into Diploma) with a reported average Diploma score of 35, above the global average of about 30
  • Strong, current international accreditation — joint CIS / IB / WASC, reaccredited 2023 through 2028
  • Large, well-resourced 45-acre campus in Bintaro with extensive facilities and 300+ extracurricular activities
  • Long-established institution (since 1973) with a genuinely international community of 50+ nationalities
  • Founding member of FOBISIA and member of COBIS, HMC and SEASAC, signalling deep British-international sector ties

Trade-offs

  • Premium fee level — top year groups exceed IDR 560 million total per year for 2026/2027, putting it out of reach for many families
  • No IGCSE pathway; families specifically wanting GCSE/A-level qualifications will not find them here
  • Not BSO-inspected, so there is no UK-style graded inspection band for external comparison
  • Day school only — no boarding option for families needing residential places

Is It Right For You?

Best For

  • Internationally mobile families wanting a recognised IB Diploma pathway in Greater Jakarta
  • Families who value broad co-curricular and sports facilities on a large campus
  • Students aiming for above-average IB outcomes and university destinations abroad
  • Expatriate families seeking an English-medium, multinational school community

Not Ideal For

  • Families wanting an IGCSE / A-level British examination route
  • Families needing boarding accommodation
  • Budget-conscious families given the premium fee structure
  • Families wanting a school with a UK BSO 'Outstanding' inspection badge specifically

Curriculum

A British foundation feeding the IB. Kindergarten uses an EYFS-based approach and Primary (Years 1-6) follows an English National Curriculum framework; Years 7-11 follow the IB Middle Years Programme and Years 12-13 the IB Diploma Programme. There is no IGCSE stage — the MYP serves as the bridge into the Diploma. The reported average IB Diploma score is 35.

Fees

Fees for 2026/2027 are published in Indonesian Rupiah and combine an annual school fee with a capital levy (CLC). Totals range from about IDR 158.5 million for the youngest Kindergarten years to about IDR 561 million for Year 13, with Primary in the IDR 428-450 million band and secondary in the IDR 506-549 million band. Fees are stated to cover tuition, textbooks, stationery and all IB examination fees for Year 13. Kindergarten to Year 11 may pay annually at a discount or termly; Years 12-13 pay annually only.

Admissions

Admission follows a structured application journey with year-group placement and an entry assessment that includes evaluating each applicant's language proficiency. The school accepts students from Kindergarten through Year 13.

Campus Life

BSJ occupies a 45-acre campus in Bintaro Jaya, South Tangerang, with more than 300 extracurricular activities, a four-house system, performing-arts and sports facilities, and a Manchester City Football Club partnership. The community spans more than 50 nationalities across 1,390+ students.
