BrightKey's Assessment

Founded in 1991 by Canadians in Hong Kong (first campus in Causeway Bay with 81 students), the Canadian International School of Hong Kong (CDNIS) now operates from a purpose-built campus at 36 Nam Long Shan Road, Aberdeen, with a separate Early Years Centre at Wong Chuk Hang. It enrols over 2,100 students from 40+ nationalities across Nursery to Grade 12, structured as a Lower School (Nursery–Grade 5) and Upper School (Grades 6–12).

Academically, CDNIS is a full IB continuum World School — authorised for PYP, MYP and DP — one of only eight schools in Hong Kong to offer all three. Its distinguishing feature is the Canadian/Ontario heritage: Upper School students can graduate with two diplomas, the IB Diploma and the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

The language model is English-primary with a genuine Chinese strand: an Early Years Bilingual Programme plus Chinese Language and Culture and Mandarin instruction, with French and Spanish also taught. Accreditation depth is high — CIS and WASC alongside IB authorisation.

CDNIS publicly positions itself among the highest IBDP average scorers worldwide; a Class of 2024 average of 38 points is reported, but this comes from a citation-flagged source and the official results page was not reachable — treat as school-reported, unverified.

Why These Ratings?

Inspection & AccreditationA Excellent

Triple validation — CIS + WASC accreditation plus full IB continuum authorisation (PYP/MYP/DP). HK has no graded inspectorate, so the tier reflects accreditation depth — A.

Strengths & Trade-offs

Strengths

  • Full IB continuum (PYP + MYP + DP) under one roof — rare even in Hong Kong (one of eight such schools)
  • Dual-diploma pathway (IB Diploma + Ontario Secondary School Diploma) — distinctive Canadian credential portability
  • Deep, independent accreditation: CIS + WASC + IB authorisation
  • Strong, established institution since 1991 with 2,100+ students and 40+ nationalities
  • Genuine bilingual/Chinese strand (Early Years Bilingual Programme, Mandarin, Chinese Language and Culture)
  • Single Nursery-to-Grade-12 continuity, minimising transition risk

Trade-offs

  • Fees are high (HKD 185,780–304,500 for 2026/27) and HK schools commonly add debenture/capital levies not publicly itemised — total cost may be materially higher
  • Published IB average (38) could not be verified on an official, dated source; the only figure traced was citation-flagged
  • EAL/learning-support provision is not detailed publicly
  • Split-site logistics: Early Years sits at a separate Wong Chuk Hang centre from the main Aberdeen campus
  • No boarding — day school only

Is It Right For You?

Best For

  • Families wanting an uninterrupted IB continuum from early years to university entry
  • Canadian/Ontario-linked families, or those valuing OSSD portability alongside the IB
  • Internationally mobile families prioritising globally recognised CIS/WASC/IB accreditation
  • Families seeking meaningful Mandarin/Chinese-bilingual exposure within an English-medium school

Not Ideal For

  • Cost-sensitive families (premium fees plus likely HK capital/debenture charges)
  • Families needing boarding
  • Families requiring documented, intensive EAL or special-needs support before enrolling (not public)
  • Those wanting a single-site campus for all ages (early years is off the main campus)

Curriculum

Full IB continuum World School: PYP (Lower School), MYP and DP (Upper School). Upper School offers the IB Diploma and the Ontario Secondary School Diploma concurrently. Mandarin, French and Spanish offered as additional languages; Early Years Bilingual Programme confirmed.

Fees

International Schools Database lists 2026/27 yearly tuition of HKD 185,780–304,500. The official tuition page did not display amounts in the fetched content, and HK schools frequently levy additional debenture/capital fees not public here — verify total cost directly with admissions.

Admissions

Nursery-through-Grade-12 intake across the Aberdeen main campus and Wong Chuk Hang Early Years Centre. Specific application fees, assessment requirements and waitlist policies were not retrievable publicly — confirm with the school.

Campus Life

Purpose-built main campus at 36 Nam Long Shan Road, Aberdeen; separate Early Years Centre at Wong Chuk Hang. Over 2,100 students, 40+ nationalities.
