At the top end, the case for computer science in the United States is a case about being where the field and its industry actually happen. The centre of gravity — MIT, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, Berkeley, Caltech, and a deep second tier — sits next to the companies that hire from it, and that proximity is the real product. What you are buying is less the lecture content, which is broadly similar to strong programmes worldwide, and more the pipeline: the labs pushing the research frontier, the faculty with industry ties, and above all the summer-internship-to-return-offer machine that funnels students into Silicon Valley and Seattle. If your child is aiming squarely at US tech or serious CS research, that ecosystem has a density no ranking page captures. The honest caveat: that density is concentrated. A mid-tier US computer science department is not automatically better than a strong programme in the UK, Canada, or Asia, and the brand on the diploma does a lot of the work families attribute to the teaching.
Structurally the American degree is liberal-arts shaped, and that cuts both ways. You do not apply to 'read computer science' and study almost nothing else; you take CS inside a broader curriculum and can combine it with mathematics, statistics, or a second field. The consequential choice is how theoretical versus applied to go, and — more than the syllabus — how deliberately you chase internships, because in US CS the internship pipeline is the career, not a supplement to it. This is one of the few fields where the American undergraduate degree is genuinely vocational at the top: a strong student can convert two good summer internships into a full-time offer before graduating. The transcript matters, but the projects, the internships, and the recruiting access the school name unlocks matter more.
Then there is money and immigration, and we will not soften either. A four-year degree at a private US research university can run well past US$300,000 all-in, and for international students the aid picture is harder than for domestic ones — most schools are need-aware for non-citizens, and the genuinely need-blind, full-need institutions are a tiny, hyper-selective set. One concrete advantage cuts the other way: computer science is a STEM field, so graduates are typically eligible for an extended period of post-study work authorisation (OPT) beyond the standard term — a meaningfully longer runway to find US employment. The catch families underestimate is the step after that: converting OPT into longer-term work usually depends on the H-1B, which is a capped lottery, not a guarantee. Immigration rules change, so confirm the current status of both before building a plan around them. Net: US computer science suits a mathematically strong student aiming at US tech or research, who can fund the cost or realistically win aid, and who picks the programme for its research fit, its internship pipeline, and its post-study standing — not its position on a list.
