Sherborne Qatar

🇶🇦 Doha · Founded 2009 · British · Ages 3–18

A British-curriculum (National Curriculum for England, IGCSE to A-Level) day-school group in Doha — the only overseas schools operated by the historic Sherborne School in Dorset, UK. Its most recent UK BSO inspections by Penta International rate the Senior School 'a good school with significant outstanding features' (2022) and judge the Prep 'good, with some outstanding features' with 'outstanding' leadership (2026): strong, genuinely verified British accreditation, but not a verbatim overall 'Outstanding' band — so our A-tier, not S.

BrightKey's Assessment

Founded in 2009 at the invitation of Qatar's Supreme Education Council, Sherborne Qatar was the first school established overseas under the Sherborne name, modelled on the 16th-century Sherborne School in Dorset, England. It has since grown into a family of schools across Doha — a co-educational Senior School at Mall of Qatar (ages 12–18), a co-educational Prep School at Bani Hajer (3–11), single-sex schools for boys (Al Rayyan) and girls (Al Ebb), and the Qetaf SEN provision. Sherborne School UK holds half the governing-board seats (including the principal/CEO) and local Qatari owners the other half.

Academically the school delivers the National Curriculum for England and EYFS, leading to IGCSE and AS/A-Level qualifications. The Senior School is an approved Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel examination centre. There is no IB pathway. In its 2021 exam series (reported in the 2022 BSO inspection), the Senior School posted IGCSE and A-Level results well above UK national averages, with graduates progressing to universities in the UK, Qatar, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia and elsewhere.

The school's accreditation rests on the UK Department for Education's British Schools Overseas scheme, inspected by Penta International — the same DfE-standard route used by leading British schools across the Gulf and Asia. It is also a member of BSME and IAPS and holds Qatar's national QNSA accreditation. The 2022 Senior inspection found pupil welfare, SMSC development and parent communication all 'outstanding,' while rating the school overall 'good with significant outstanding features.' The 2026 Prep inspection judged leadership and management 'outstanding' and education quality 'good, with some outstanding features.'

For internationally-mobile families, Sherborne Qatar offers a recognisable, UK-rooted British education with strong pastoral care, continuing links to the founding UK school, and transparent published fees (QAR 35,000–66,053 for AY 2024/25 by year group and campus). It is a day school only — there is no boarding despite Sherborne UK's boarding heritage. Because the BSO band is the band below 'Outstanding,' and Qatar has no graded public inspectorate, the school sits at A.

Why These Ratings?

Inspection & AccreditationA Excellent

Qatar's regulator does not publish a graded public inspection band, so the credible quality signal is the UK BSO inspection. Sherborne Qatar's BSO band is verbatim 'a good school with significant outstanding features' (Senior, 2022) — genuinely strong and DfE-standard, but explicitly the band BELOW 'outstanding.' Because there is no verbatim overall 'Outstanding' BSO judgement, the school is A, not S. Its real Sherborne UK link, Penta BSO accreditation, above-UK-average results and 'outstanding' pastoral/leadership sub-judgements firmly support an A.

Strengths & Trade-offs

Strengths

  • Only overseas schools operated by the historic Sherborne School UK, with continuing shared governance and ethos oversight
  • Genuine UK DfE British Schools Overseas accreditation (Penta International), recently renewed (Prep, Jan 2026)
  • 'Outstanding' sub-judgements for pupil welfare/safety, SMSC development and parent communication (2022) and leadership/management (2026 Prep)
  • School-published IGCSE/A-Level results (2021) materially above UK national averages
  • Approved Cambridge International AND Pearson Edexcel examination centre
  • Transparent, publicly published fee schedule and broad SEN provision (dedicated Qetaf school)

Trade-offs

  • BSO overall band is 'good with significant outstanding features' — not the verbatim 'Outstanding' that top-tier Gulf/Asia British schools hold
  • No IB pathway — British-only curriculum
  • No boarding, despite the Sherborne UK boarding heritage families may expect
  • Most recent school-published exam results retrievable are from 2021 (2022 inspection); no newer public results found
  • Fragmented multi-campus, multi-brand structure (rebranded ~2024) makes a single coherent 'school' identity harder to assess; single-sex vs co-ed varies by campus

Is It Right For You?

Best For

  • Families wanting a UK-rooted British curriculum with an authentic Sherborne UK link
  • Families needing IGCSE/A-Level continuity for UK/international university entry
  • Families valuing strong pastoral care and SEN provision
  • Families who specifically want single-sex options (boys' or girls' campuses)

Not Ideal For

  • Families seeking the IB Diploma
  • Families needing boarding
  • Families who require a top-band verbatim 'Outstanding' inspection as a non-negotiable
  • Families wanting one unified single-campus school rather than a multi-site group

Curriculum

National Curriculum for England and EYFS, leading to IGCSE then AS/A-Level. The Senior School is an approved Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel examination centre (so Cambridge-authorized, also Edexcel). No IB programmes.
