Campus and city
The campus sits in Waterloo, Ontario, a mid-sized city of 130,000 people in the Kitchener-Waterloo region. Toronto is 1.5 hours away by car or GO Transit. Student life revolves around academic terms and co-op cycles: every four months, roughly half the student body leaves for work placements while the other half returns. This rhythm creates a transient social environment where friendships require deliberate effort. Over 200 clubs exist on paper, but participation fluctuates with co-op schedules. Housing is affordable relative to Toronto, with most upper-year students renting in the surrounding neighbourhoods for CAD 700-1,100 per month. The campus itself is functional rather than beautiful, with brutalist 1960s buildings alongside newer facilities like the Quantum-Nano Centre. Mental health support has expanded significantly since 2017, with same-day counselling appointments now available through the Stepped Care Model. The social scene skews toward study groups, hackathons, and startup events rather than parties.
