Application strategy
Waterloo evaluates more than grades. The Admission Information Form (AIF) carries real weight, particularly the essay explaining extracurricular depth and the short-answer questions about your interest in the program. For CS and Engineering, aim for a 95%+ average in Ontario or equivalent, but recognize that a 97% applicant with a blank AIF loses to a 93% applicant who demonstrates genuine technical projects. Include contest results if you have them: Euclid, CCC, and AMC scores provide signal that Waterloo trusts. The admissions committee looks for evidence of self-directed learning, not just classroom performance. International applicants should note that predicted grades from IB or A-Levels are accepted, but final offers are conditional. Apply by the January deadline for early consideration; rolling offers begin in February for Engineering and May for Mathematics.
