Campus and city
Champaign-Urbana forms a classic Midwestern college town where the university is the economic and cultural center. Big Ten football at the 60,000-seat Memorial Stadium and basketball at State Farm Center anchor the athletics calendar with passionate Orange and Blue fandom. Greek life is a major social force with roughly 20% of undergraduates participating across more than 100 fraternity and sorority chapters. Over 1,600 registered student organizations range from engineering competition teams to cultural groups to performing arts ensembles. The Main Quad provides a central gathering space surrounded by historic buildings. Despite enrolling 56,000 students, the 1,783-acre campus spreads activity across multiple zones preventing congestion. Winters are genuinely cold with temperatures regularly below freezing, but fall football season and spring bring the campus alive. The Krannert Center for the Performing Arts hosts world-class performances, while Allerton Park offers a natural retreat 25 miles from campus.
