Campus and city
Munich is consistently rated Germany's most desirable city, offering Alps skiing and hiking one hour south by S-Bahn, the 370-hectare Englischer Garten for summer relaxation, traditional Bavarian beer halls in the Altstadt, and the world-famous Oktoberfest each September. The city is exceptionally cycling-friendly with dedicated lanes throughout, and public transport via S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram, and bus networks runs efficiently until late night. However, the housing crisis is Munich's defining student challenge: Studentenwerk dormitory waitlists run 6-12 months, and private rooms cost EUR 600-900 (USD 648-972 at 1.08) monthly. LMU has no single campus; the main building sits on Geschwister-Scholl-Platz in the city center while sciences operate from Grosshadern and Martinsried in the southwest suburbs. Over 700 student initiatives (Hochschulgruppen) cover everything from consulting clubs to alpine sports, coordinated through the student union (Studierendenvertretung). The international community clusters around the International Office events and language tandem programs.
