Application strategy
International applicants need a qualification recognized as equivalent to the German Hochschulreife (Abitur). IB diploma holders should target 38+ points for competitive programs; Medicine requires top marks due to NumerusClausus (NC) selection capping admission at approximately 1.0-1.2 Abitur equivalent. NC also restricts Psychology and Pharmacy. Most bachelor programs are taught entirely in German, requiring DSH-2 or TestDaF 4x4 (C1 level) certification. English-taught master's programs are expanding rapidly across sciences and economics but remain the minority. Non-EU applicants apply through uni-assist (the centralized application portal) with deadlines typically July 15 for winter semester and January 15 for summer semester. Document authentication and translation add 4-6 weeks to processing. For Medicine specifically, international applicants compete in a separate quota (5% of seats) evaluated on grades, TestAS scores, and subject-specific aptitude tests.
