BrightKey's Assessment

Bavarian International School (BIS) is one of the Munich area's longest-running international schools, founded in 1991 and now operating two day campuses: its main site at Schloss Haimhausen, roughly 15 km north of Munich, and a City Campus in Munich-Schwabing that opened in 2016 for younger pupils. The school enrols around 1,260 students drawn from roughly 70 nationalities, with about three-quarters coming from international families, and teaches through English while offering German alongside.

BIS is a full International Baccalaureate continuum school, authorized for the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme, spanning ages 3 to 18. It is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS), the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the International Baccalaureate Organization, the three credentials that international families most commonly look for. Academic outcomes are solid: the school reports an IB Diploma average of 35 points and a 96% pass rate for its Class of 2023.

As a day school in the Munich area, BIS suits relocating and expatriate families who want a recognised IB pathway with strong English-language support; English as an Additional Language provision is part of the offer, reflecting the school's high proportion of international and multilingual pupils. Tuition for 2026-27 runs from about EUR 18,500 for Early Childhood to EUR 24,850 in the upper secondary grades, plus registration and a three-year entrance fee, placing it firmly in the premium international-school bracket for the region.

Germany has no national graded school-inspection band comparable to the English or UAE systems, so BIS cannot be assigned a verbatim regulator grade; its quality assurance rests instead on the CIS/NEASC accreditation cycle and IB authorization. On that basis the inspection and accreditation dimension is rated 'A' rather than 'S'.

Why These Ratings?

Inspection & AccreditationA Excellent

Germany has no national graded inspection band for international schools, so no verbatim 'Outstanding'-style rating exists to justify an 'S'. BIS instead holds the standard trio of international credentials - CIS, NEASC and IB authorization for all four programmes - which supports a strong 'A'.

Strengths & Trade-offs

Strengths

  • Full IB continuum (PYP, MYP, DP and CP) authorized across ages 3-18
  • Triple-accredited by CIS, NEASC and the IB Organization
  • Solid published outcomes: IB Diploma average of 35 points and 96% pass for the Class of 2023
  • Highly international community of roughly 1,260 students from around 70 nationalities
  • Two campuses serving the wider Munich area, including a dedicated City Campus for younger pupils

Trade-offs

  • Premium fees rising to around EUR 24,850 a year in upper secondary, plus a multi-year entrance fee
  • Day school only, with no boarding option for families needing residential places
  • English-medium only, so less suited to families wanting a German-curriculum pathway
  • Main campus sits outside central Munich, implying a commute for city-based families

Is It Right For You?

  • Expatriate and relocating families wanting a recognised IB continuum
  • Multilingual pupils needing English as an Additional Language support
  • Families seeking a CIS/NEASC/IB-accredited school in the Munich area
  • Students aiming for the IB Diploma or Career-related Programme

Not Ideal For

  • Families needing boarding or residential provision
  • Those seeking the German national curriculum or Abitur pathway
  • Budget-conscious families given the premium fee structure
  • City-centre families unwilling to commute to the Haimhausen campus

Curriculum

BIS is an IB World School authorized for the full continuum - PYP, MYP, DP and CP - covering ages 3 to 18. Teaching is in English, with German taught alongside; the City Campus runs the PYP for younger pupils while the Haimhausen campus covers the full age range through to the Diploma.

Fees

Annual tuition for 2026-27 ranges from about EUR 18,500 (Early Childhood) and EUR 18,530 (Grades 1-5) up to EUR 21,460 (Grades 6-8), EUR 22,530 (Grade 9) and EUR 24,850 (Grades 10-12). New families also pay a EUR 200 application fee, a EUR 2,250 registration fee and a three-year entrance fee totalling EUR 14,790 per child. Fees are reviewed annually and exclude extras such as transport, lunch and IB exam fees.

Admissions

Admission is open to international and local families across the Munich area; English as an Additional Language support is available, reflecting a community where around three-quarters of students come from international families speaking some 70 home languages. New entrants pay an application and registration fee plus a three-year entrance fee.

The school operates two day campuses in the Munich area: the main site within the historic Schloss Haimhausen about 15 km north of the city, and a City Campus in Munich-Schwabing opened in 2016 for younger pupils.
