🇺🇬 Universities in Uganda

1 universities evaluated for international families.

Uganda's flagship is Makerere University in Kampala — once dubbed the 'Harvard of Africa,' it educated a generation of post-colonial leaders across the continent (presidents of Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, DRC) and major writers (Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o). English-medium, with genuine global strength in HIV/AIDS and infectious-disease research (its Infectious Diseases Institute supports much of Uganda's national HIV effort). The honest context: severe funding/infrastructure constraints of a low-income-economy public university, a modest global ranking (QS ~#1001–1200), a history of strikes and closures (and a 2020 fire that gutted the historic Main Building), and brain drain. Best for public-health, medicine and infectious-disease students wanting a genuine African research hub, or East African students seeking the region's most historically prestigious university at low cost.

Post-Study Work

Student visa sponsored by the institution; no automatic post-study work visa — graduates convert via employer sponsorship

Application System

Avg. International Fees

Public universities (Makerere) are low-cost (~USD 700–2,500/year domestic); international/medicine higher (~USD 2,500–6,000/year)
