Application strategy
Undergraduate entry is via JEE (Main) then JEE Advanced, with seat allocation through JoSAA counselling — aim for the lowest possible Advanced rank, as CSE and EE cutoffs are among India's toughest. The online BS in Data Science is a separate, exam-free route: a 4-week qualifier replaces JEE entirely, making it the most accessible way into the IITM ecosystem. Postgraduate MTech/MS admission runs through the GATE exam, and MBA via CAT plus DoMS shortlisting.
Who fits
- Top-percentile Indian STEM students who clear JEE Advanced and want the strongest engineering brand in the country
- Aspiring deep-tech founders seeking the IITM Research Park's incubation and industry network
- Working professionals and second-degree learners wanting a credible, affordable online BS in Data Science
- Research-bound students aiming for top global PhD programs in engineering and applied science
- Students prioritising domestic placement strength and pan-IIT alumni access
Who should think twice
- International students seeking a globally diverse cohort and high foreign-student ratio
- Students who need a holistic, essay-and-portfolio admissions route rather than a single entrance exam
- Those wanting a strong on-campus liberal-arts or humanities-led education
- Applicants relying on IB, A-Levels or AP credentials for direct undergraduate entry (admission is JEE-based)
- Students seeking small classes and high individual faculty attention
Visa and application system in India
- Student visa / post-study work: Student visa for inbound study; most top institutes are domestic-exam-gated (JEE/CAT/CUET). For Indians studying abroad, India is the world's largest or second-largest source of international students
- Application system: JEE Advanced (IITs) / CAT (IIMs) / CUET (central universities) / BITSAT (BITS) — institution-specific national exams
